We invite you to attend our American Indian Graduate Student Recruitment event on March 22-23, 2012. To best prepare you to fully benefit from this experience, please follow the steps below:

  1. Send an email indicating your interest to Courtney Lewis at native@unc.edu.

  2. Review the graduate degree programs offered at UNC Chapel Hill and select up to two areas of interest.

An important part of selecting which University will be the best fit for you is finding the best match between your interests and the specific programs offered. Please take some time to review the list of graduate degree programs offered at UNC Chapel Hill. Look at the specific courses and areas of study offered, the research conducted by the faculty, and the profiles of recently admitted students. Decide which program (or programs) you think would best fit with your own academic interests and career goals. You will be asked to provide your selected program (or two) while completing registration.

  3. Research the graduate programs in which you are most interested and identify the faculty members whose research interests you most.

Your visit to campus will be most useful to you if you are able to identify and meet with UNC faculty with whom you may want to work. You can find much about faculty members' research on the web. You will be asked to identify the faculty members with whom you would like to meet while completing registration. We highly recommend that you email any professors that you are interested in working with to discuss your fit within their program. This is essential for prospective doctoral students in selecting the university that is best for you, while master's students may also make more informed decisions by meeting with specific faculty.

If you are interested in any of our doctoral biological or biomedical degrees, please see the BBSP webpage. You may also be interested in our new post-baccalaureate program, PREP.

  4. If you find that you are a good fit for the UNC graduate program you are interested in and if you need help financing your attendance, please submit a request for financial assistance as soon as possible.

Financial assistance is available to help you with travel and lodging costs of attending our recruitment event. Please complete and submit the financial assistance formpdf icon (if applicable) as soon as possible but no later than midnight (PST) Friday, February 10, 2012. You will receive information on the financial assistance we can provide you as soon as possible after your application is submitted. You will need to include your estimated expenses now, and you will be reimbursed for actual expenses, up to the amount promised you, after the recruitment event.

For the fastest reimbursement, please provide receipts for travel while you are here for your visit. Please be aware that it may take up to three weeks to receive reimbursement after you submit your form and accompanying receipts. Students who submit these later may experience a longer delay in the processing of their reimbursement.

  5. Register for the recruitment event as soon as possible, but no later than Feb. 10 if you would like to be considered for funding. If you would not like consideration for funding, the deadline is March 9.

Please follow the link below to register for the recruitment event. There is a $25 registration fee. You may request that this registration fee be reimbursed to you by applying for financial assistance. If financial assistance with the registration is awarded to you, it will be refunded after you attend the event.

  6. Make Travel and Hotel Arrangements

Please make your travel arrangements prior to registering for the conference as your flight information (if applicable) will be requested during registration. Transportation to and from the airport is available via SuperShuttle, the most cost-effective method of local transportation. The SuperShuttle recommends you make reservations in advance by calling (800) 258-3826. When you call, inform the representative you will need transportation to the Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel. You may also book a reservation from the airport when you arrive. If you do not make reservations in advance be sure to bring enough cash to pay for the shuttle; the cost is approximately $20. Other transportation arrangements, such as taxi service, are also readily available at the airport if the SuperShuttle is not available for you.

Lodging, at a reduced rate, has been reserved for American Indian recruitment event attendees at the Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel, 1 Europa Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27517. If you wish, the Graduate School will provide free double occupancy lodging at the Sheraton. You may also reserve your own single room by contacting the Sheraton at (919) 968-4900. Please indicate your preferences for lodging arrangements when you register for the recruitment event.
