New Directions in American Indian Research Conference

March 7-8, 2008

Call for Abstracts

The First Nations Graduate Circle, an organization of American Indian graduate students at Carolina, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Graduate School announce a call for papers to be presented at our upcoming biennial conference on March 7-8, 2008.

This conference showcases the scholarship of American Indian graduate students in all fields of study as well as scholarship by all graduate students on topics and issues of relevance to Native communities.

How to submit an abstract:

Graduate students are encouraged to submit an abstract of your oral paper presentation by January 4, 2008, to native@unc.edu. Please submit the following information:

  • Title of Paper
  • Name and contact information of submitting author (or all authors as applicable)
  • Name
  • University/college
  • Tribal affiliation, if any
  • E-mail address
  • Phone
  • Mailing address
  • A maximum 300 word abstract of your research
  • A maximum 75 word biographical sketch of presenting author(s)

Conference presentations will be approximately twenty minutes in length. An electronic copy of your presentation must be submitted by February 7, 2008, if you are selected to present at the conference.

Contributions from all disciplines/programs are welcome including humanities, fine arts, social, basic and medical sciences, public health, and professional programs.

leaf icon Student Travel Awards

Highly meritorious papers and posters will be selected to receive New Directions Scholarship Travel Awards of $500 to assist with the costs of travel to the conference. All selected paper and poster presenters will receive reimbursement for the cost of conference registration. Notification of paper/poster selections will occur no later than mid-January.

Undergraduate students, in all disciplines, are encouraged to participate by presenting research poster presentations. Submit an abstract of your presentation by January 4, 2008, to native@unc.edu. Please include the following information:

Members of Native communities are encouraged to participate by submitting paper abstracts, including proposals for panels of speakers. Collaborative panels with both academic and community presenters are strongly encouraged. Submit an abstract of your presentation by January 4, 2008, to native@unc.edu.
