In conjunction with Weaver Street Grocery Co-Op, WCHA was begun in 2002 to secure low-cost housing alternatives in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. The association buys apartment buildings or complexes, establishes housing co-operative, and then allows families, low-income workers, retired people, and individuals with special needs to become member/residents. Because ownership is held by a nonprofit trust, monthly rent is relatively low. This insures that as housing prices goes up in Chapel Hill and Carrboro the community remains demographically and socially diverse.
