The Versatile PhD: New Career Resource available for Graduate Students in Humanities and Social Sciences

October 18, 2010

A new resource has been purchased especially for UNC graduate students that demystifies nonacademic careers for humanists and social scientists, showing many plausible career paths and providing robust support should one decide to prepare for a possible nonacademic career. Users do not have to go anywhere, pay anything, get on any annoying lists, or do anything inconvenient.

The Versatile PhD is a web-based resource that UNC graduate students can use anytime, from any computer. It includes:

  • A thriving, supportive web-based community where a student can participate in discussions, network with real “Versatile PhDs” (humanists and social scientists outside the academy), or just listen and learn by osmosis
  • An online collection of compelling first-person narratives written by Versatile PhDs, describing how they established their post-academic careers and giving their best advice
  • “Career Panel” discussions where Versatile PhDs working in a given field share their specific professional experiences in that field and answer questions from members (upcoming topics include Policy Analysis, Educational Consulting, and High School Teaching)
  • An associated LinkedIn group where a student can begin to build an online presence and network with Versatile PhDs in a wide variety of fields

The Versatile PhD is confidential. It can be accessed anywhere, the protected areas are invisible to search engines, and users are in control of what people know about them.

Students can visit The Versatile PhD today and register on the site for membership. Graduate students at UNC Chapel Hill get access to the Premium Content Area where those high-quality written materials are stored.
