Graduate students honored at annual recognition celebration

The 13th Annual Graduate Student Recognition Celebration was held April 6, 2011, at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center. This event, which began in 1999, recognizes students who receive prestigious fellowships and awards.
Nearly 310 external awards were recognized for the 2010-11 academic year, as well as the following awards:
- The 2011 Linda Dykstra Distinguished Dissertation Awards: Recipients were Paul Giresi, within the area of biological and life sciences; Christopher Polt, within the area of humanities and fine arts; Nathan Westcott, within the area of physical sciences and engineering; and Tatevik Sekhposyan, within the area of social sciences.
- The Dean's Award for Significant Contributions to Graduate Education: Bruce Carney, executive vice chancellor and provost at UNC-Chapel Hill.
- The Boka W. Hadzija Award for Distinguished University Service by a Graduate or Professional Student: Matthew John Olmsted, orthodontics.
- The 23 recipients of the 2011 Impact Award for research benefiting North Carolina were also honored.
