what I'm thankful for

every year at thanksgiving I like to sit and reflect about what it is that I am thankful for in this life.  For this blog, I thought a brief reflection on what I'm thankful for in terms of urban livability would be highly appropriate.

I am thankful for being able to live in a place where I can walk to a park, several stores, and a bus stop

Great point Marc. Growing up in Weaverville, North Carolina I had no inkling of a day in which I could accomplish a semester in graduate school without the use of a personal vehicle. Ironically, I enjoyed the blessings of public transit in Mexico and China, but never lived in a U.S. area with public transit-- enter Chapel Hill. Since moving to the Triangle area in August, I have been so blessed with the opportunity to engage in graduate school work, and even field work, all without having to depend on a personal vehicle and what this necessarily includes: environmental compromise, fuel expense, maintenance, and distance between me and fellow world travelers. I am much more a citizen of this town due to public transit...I look people in the eye as we sit together, I learn their daily habits and rituals...and I am blessed.

Truth, truth .. In kind, I'm thankful to live within a 10 minute walk of two grocery stores (including a coop) and the Carrboro farmer's market. Think of how many people in this country can access on foot only a shameful corner store: vendors of beef jerky, fritos and 40s...
