When Carroll, Hanes and Gardner Halls were constructed in the 1950s for the new School of Business
Administration, a salesman persuaded the University to use new chalkboards made from glass instead of slate, claiming
that the new boards would be easier to erase, less expensive and easier on student eyes because they were green
instead of black. Unfortunately, about six months after the new buildings opened, 32 of the glass boards spontaneously
exploded during the night. Students arriving in the morning found, in place of chalkboards, small crystals lying on
the floor [19].
