Transdisciplinary Studies

The Graduate School of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill encourages the development of programs in graduate education that are responsive to changing disciplinary, professional, economic, and social circumstances. Transdisciplinary programs are of three distinct types: dual degrees, joint degrees and interdisciplinary degrees.

In the case of new joint degrees or interdisciplinary degrees, the regular Academic Program Development Procedures will be followed. The policy above details the process for new dual degrees.

It is expected that prior to beginning any formal planning, the Department will consult with The Graduate School to discuss the proper procedures and documentation necessary for a successful academic planning process. Please contact the Associate Dean for Academics for further information.
