Graduate Certificates

Programs have various options when developing specialized studies for post-baccalaureate, graduate, and professional students. The Graduate School encourages programs to review the Options for Specialized Study before beginning their proposal.

A Certificate Program is a formal program of courses and other work (i.e. practicum, seminars, field study) in a field of specialization. Like an academic degree, a Certificate Program is offered by a host academic department or other unit and is related to an academic area of study. In some disciplines, a certificate is akin to a professional credential, while in others, a certificate is recognition of competence in a given skill, practice, or field of study.

Guidelines for Certificate Programs

Proposals to create a Certificate Program should use the Certificate Program Application Form.

Please note this policy applies to programs that have degrees awarded through the Graduate School and non-academic campus units desiring to establish Certificate Programs. Non-Degree Seeking Student Certificate Programs and Certificate Programs offered by Schools with degrees that are not awarded through the Graduate School should follow the Provost's Office guidelines.

It is expected that prior to beginning any formal planning, programs will consult with the Graduate School to discuss the proper procedures and documentation necessary for a successful academic planning process. Please contact the Associate Dean for Academics for further information.

Upon approval of the certificate proposal, programs receive a copy of the authorization letter that instructs them how to track and approve recipients and have the official remark placed on student transcripts.
