Breakout sessions I

  • Recent Alumni Panel (Location: Harris)
Please join us for a panel of recent graduates of the University of North Carolina at Chapel graduate program representing a range of professions (industry to the academy.) Learn about the job search experience, prep while a student, early career challenges, involvement while at Carolina, and things that they know now that they wish they knew when they were in your shoes. Panelists will include: Chad Lloyd, PhD Marine Sciences '23; JeMya McClendon, MPH Nutrition and Dietetics '23; Kate Slate, MA Journalism '23; and Leah Townsend, PhD Neuroscience '16.
  • Transitioning to the American University (Location: Peebles)
The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office is partnering with the Graduate School's Diversity and Student Success office (DSS) and the Writing Center to offer special breakout sessions for new international students at Orientation.  Returning international students will share their perspectives about acclimating to the U.S. and UNC. The session will also provide details about programs for international graduate students through Global Grads and the Writing Center and an opportunity to connect with other new students.
  • Coping with Imposter Syndrome (Location: Royall)
What is imposter syndrome? How do you manage it? This session, led by Graduate Orientation Ambassadors, Melissa Lam-McCarthy, Annalee Lake, and Nathaniel "Berry" Berry, covers how your fellow graduate students have negotiated, reframed, and navigated their journey at UNC-Chapel Hill. Come with any questions you may have, and let's talk about getting well-equipped for your start at Carolina!
  • Introduction to iThenticate (Location: Dowd)
iThenticate is a cloud-based product that many call a plagiarism checking tool. We recommend using iThenticate as a writing tool to help ensure that scholarly and research documents such as manuscripts, theses, dissertations, and grant applications follow proper citation practices. Documents should be evaluated prior to submission to journals, funding agencies, or academic repositories. iThenticate is available to you through a Single Sign-On using your ONYEN.

In this session, join Graduate Orientation Ambassadors, Danya Krueger, Kierra Peak and Alix Mahon, to discuss burnout and how they deal with it by practicing self-care. This session will cover: what burnout is and how it shows up while in Graduate School, resources for supporting self-care, ways to avoid burnout, and time for Q&A with the session facilitators.
  • Introduction to LabArchives (Location: Dowd)
LabArchives is a secure, cloud-based electronic notebook that enables researchers to capture, manage, store, and share information and data. In this workshop you will receive an overview of LabArchives and learn the benefits of moving from a paper to an electronic notebook.
