- Recent Alumni Panel (Location: Carolina Club Ballroom)
Please join us for a panel of recent graduates of the University of North Carolina at Chapel graduate program (recent five years); representing a range of professions (industry to the academy) learn about the job search experience, prep while a student, early career challenges, involvement while at Carolina, and things that they know now that they wish they knew when they were in your shoes.
- Transitioning to the American University (Location: Peebles)
The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office is partnering with the Graduate School's Student Success office and the Writing Center to offer special breakout sessions for new international students at Orientation. Returning international students will share their perspectives about acclimating to the U.S. and UNC. The session will also provide details about programs for international graduate students through Global Grads and the Writing Center and an opportunity to connect with other new students.
- Coping with Imposter Syndrome (Location: Royall)
What is imposter syndrome? How do you manage it? This session, led by Graduate Orientation Ambassadors Simone Wilson, Elizabeth Sanford, & David Gaviria, covers how your fellow graduate students have negotiated, reframed, and navigated their journey at UNC-Chapel Hill. Come with any questions you may have, and let's talk about getting well-equipped for your start at Carolina!
- Navigating the Faculty Mentor Relationship (Location: Harris)
Building a strong and productive relationship with your faculty mentor is essential for your academic and professional development as a graduate student. Join Graduate Orientation Ambassadors, Danya Krueger, Aliyah Griffith, and Araba Oduro as they share their experiences to help equip you with the tools to foster a successful mentoring relationship and make the most of your mentorship. The session will use scenarios and Q&A to cover how to set clear boundaries, manage potential conflicts, and handle realistic feedback including some tips from current faculty and campus advisors.
- Connecting with Carolina & Chapel Hill (Location: Dowd)
Carolina is a big place with lots of opportunities to meet other graduate students, try new things, and build community. This session, led by Graduate Orientation Ambassadors Nathaniel "Berry" Berry, Melissa Lam-McCarthy, Bryn Haden, Sanchit Saiganesh, and Audrey Pereira, will help new graduate students figure out where to start when it comes to connecting with Carolina and the surrounding community. Learn about interesting places to explore in Chapel Hill/Carrboro and the surrounding areas, as well as on-campus opportunities to help make Carolina feel like home!
- BeAM Makerspace Tour & Training (Location: Carmichael Residence Hall)
Join us at the BeAM Makerspace in Carmichael Hall to learn how to use tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and more for your research, academic coursework, or personal projects. During this session, you will complete your hands-on BeAM 101 training and unlock access to all three BeAM makerspaces on UNC's campus. Prior registration required.

Join Graduate Orientation Ambassadors, Simone Wilson, Melissa Lam-McCarthy, Jo Klevdal, and Sugandh Gupta to discuss caregiving responsibilities and burnout and how they deal with it by practicing self-care. This session will cover: what is burnout, how it shows up while in graduate school, and ways to avoid it; resources for supporting self-care and community, and Graduate School resources for managing caregiving responsibilities, and time for Q&A with the session facilitators.
