About this Issue

Advancing Carolina Graduate Education

The Fountain is an annual publication of the Graduate School of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill dedicated to highlighting the achievements of graduate students and the significant need for private funding to support their efforts. The magazine is fully supported by private funding and is distributed to nearly 10,000 donors, alumni and friends of the Graduate School.

This year’s edition of The Fountain is a retrospective view of the past twelve years of graduate education at Carolina during which Linda A. Dykstra has led the Graduate School as its dean.

Originally produced biannually, The Fountain was first introduced in the spring of 1999. The Fountain has focused on diverse themes such as university-corporate partnerships, graduate students serving North Carolina, the importance of mentoring and the lasting legacy of private funding.

The Fountain is produced by graduate students under the guidance of Sandra Hoeflich, Associate Dean for Interdisciplinary Education, Fellowships and Communication. This year, Joshua D. Meyer is senior editor, J. Todd Brantley is junior editor and Margarita De Pano is a contributing writer. All three members are master’s students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Last fall, The Fountain staff conducted a readership survey to better understand the interests of our audience. These survey responses will be integral in shaping the Graduate School’s future communications.

Please enjoy this year’s look back over the Graduate School’s recent history. This account shows clearly that with strong, visionary leadership, and the support of dedicated donors and friends, the Graduate School can assist programs to continually improve and support Carolina’s talented graduate students.
