Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad
The Fulbright-Hays DDRA Fellowship Program provides opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States.
Eligibility
You are eligible if you:
- Are a citizen or national of the United States or a permanent resident of the United States;
- Are a graduate student in good standing who, when the fellowship begins, is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral program in modern foreign languages and area studies;
- Are planning a teaching career in the United States upon graduation; and
- Possess adequate skills in the language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation project.
Award Amount
The fellowship provides:
- travel expenses, including excess baggage to and from the residence to the host country of research;
- maintenance and dependents allowances based on the cost of living in country(ies) of research for six to twelve months;
- project allowance for research related expenses such as books, copying, tuition and affiliation fees, local travel and other incidental expenses;
- health and accident insurance premiums
Application
You will submit your application through the Department of Education's G6 grant management system. The required materials include:
- Basic Personal Data on Application Form
- CV
- Narrative (project description)
- No more than 10 pages
- Bibliography
- No more than 2 pages
- Host Country Supporting Materials
- Letters of invitation, affiliation, etc., optional
- Transcripts
- Graduate required; undergraduate, optional
- References (3)
- One must be dissertation advisor
- Language Reference(s)
- IRB narrative
The Graduate School will review materials and submit the final application on behalf of all eligible applicants.

- February 27, 12:00-1:00 PM - The Graduate School's Fulbright-Hays DDRA Information Session for interested students — Register for information session
- March 15 - Deadline for you to submit your materials through G6 for internal review
- March 29 - Deadline for The Graduate School to submit the final application to the Department of Education on behalf of all applicants
