Amateur geologists, students of natural history, and those who simply appreciate beauty will all
enjoy a visit to Mitchell Hall, home of the University's geology department. Lining the first floor halls of the
building are dozens of glass cases housing specimens of rocks and minerals, many of them native to North Carolina.
While you are there, visit the geology department library and browse through over 48,000 titles on subjects ranging
from petrology (the study of rocks and minerals) to micropaleontology (the study of microscopic plant and animal
fossils), or read one of the 850 periodicals and magazines kept here. There are also sketch maps to the Walter H.
Wheeler Garden, located just North of Mitchell Hall, a rock garden that showcases a number of large specimens of
North Carolina rocks and minerals.
