In 1795 when UNC-Chapel Hill opened its doors, Hinton James was the first student to enroll. James had walked all the way from his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina some 90 miles away. It is said that his feet were so sore that he had to stay in bed for a while to recuperate before he could start classes. He turned out to be an enterprising student whose name often appeared on the honor roll. In 1798 James graduated and started a career in Civil Engineering. Today the dorm located furthest away from classroom buildings bears his name. [21] [22] [23].
