In 1916, automobiles were still growing in popularity. Henry Ford had begun marketing the Model T in
1908 at a price of $950, which rapidly fell as manufacturing improved. As if it mattered: the roads in the Triangle
were unpaved and often in poor condition. Students wanting to get "all the way" to Durham were faced with a daunting
prospect. There was one shuttle service between the two cities. Tank Hunter, known as the "Friend of the Boys,"
would drive students the fifteen miles and back. Total commute time: just over two hours [17].
