Masters Students
Student Assistance Grants and Scholarships
Graduate Tuition Incentive Scholarship
- Helps to cover the cost of in-state tuition for master's and doctoral students who receive eligible external funding awards
Graduate Student Opportunity Fund
- Assists students with unusual and unexpected academic expenses
Graduate Student Transportation Grant
- Assists graduate students with some of the transportation costs necessary for travel to a regional, national, or international academic conference or professional society meeting to present their thesis or dissertation research.
One-Time Awards
Impact Award
- Recognizes graduate students whose research has demonstrated a special impact on the citizens of North Carolina.
Horizon Award
- Recognizes graduate students whose research holds extremely high potential for making a significant contribution to the citizens of North Carolina.
Boka W. Hadzija Award for Distinguished University Service
- Recognizes a graduate student with outstanding character, scholarship, leadership, and service to the University.
Doctoral Students
Fellowships
Dissertation Completion Fellowship
- Supports doctoral students engaged in research and writing toward the completion of their dissertations.
- Includes a non-service stipend, tuition, fees, and health insurance during a student's final year
- Royster Society of Fellows Dissertation Completion Fellowships (available to students in all research disciplines/topics):
- Special purpose Dissertation Completion Fellowships:
- Sequoyah Fellowship for American Indian doctoral students or any doctoral students conducting research on American Indian topics
- Diversity in the Sciences
- Diversity in the Humanities, Social Sciences or Professional Programs
- Jessie Ball duPont Fellowship for Adolescent Studies
Off-Campus Dissertation Research Fellowship
- Supports doctoral students conducting dissertation research away from the Chapel Hill campus
- Includes a non-service stipend, tuition, fees, and health insurance
- General Off-Campus Dissertation Research Fellowship, available for one semester
- Special purpose fellowships, available for one academic year:
- Georges Lurcy Fellowship for doctoral students studying in France
- Werner Friederich Fellowship for doctoral students in the humanities (preferably studying in Switzerland)
Summer Research Fellowship
- Provides summer support to doctoral students so that they may focus exclusively on their dissertation research
- Priority is given to students who normally do not have funding during the summer and have actively pursued external funding opportunities
- Includes a non-service stipend only
Richard Bland Fellowship Professional Pathways Program
- Supports graduate students who identify a summer work opportunity and a willing professional mentor to enable them to explore a specific career path and the skills necessary for success.
- In collaboration with this mentor, the student must create and propose a relevant, hands-on internship of at least 200 hours designed to achieve their specific goals for career exploration and experience.
- Fellowship funding for the summer will provide a living stipend and enable the graduate student to engage exclusively in this unique learning internship for the summer.

- Recognizes the scholarly contributions of doctoral students in their dissertation projects, highlighting original and innovative work. Open to doctoral students and recent graduates.

- Recognizes graduate students whose research has a special impact on the citizens of North Carolina.
Horizon Award
- Recognizes graduate students whose research holds extremely high potential for making a significant contribution to the citizens of North Carolina.
Boka W. Hadzija Award for Distinguished University Service
- Recognizes a graduate student with outstanding character, scholarship, leadership, and service to the University.
